Carey v. Russo: Movement meets with 15th District candidates

Supporting those who will best represent Ohio’s credit unions interest in Congress is always a top League advocacy priority. With the sudden retirement of a huge credit union champion in now-former Congressman Steve Stivers, the League and CUNA immediately worked to decide how to influence the special election to replace him in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District. After initial discussions with Mike Carey (R-Columbus) and State Rep. Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington), the League arranged a OCULPAC Board dialogue, comprised of your credit union peers, with both candidates to determine the best option for Ohio credit union representation in the open seat. Following a strong dialogue on Tuesday with both candidates, the League, with consultation with both the OCULPAC Board and CUNA, decided to support Mr. Carey. In addition to the political realities of the district, Mr. Carey signaled a strong alignment with credit union priorities including: an interest in retaining Ohio’s strong voice on House Financial Services (after having lost one of Ohio’s members with a 2nd to come next year); a commitment to fostering a common-sense regulatory approach so you can effectively serve your members; and openness to credit union empowerment in areas like Field of Membership expansion, payday lending alternatives and, most importantly, a commitment to hearing from credit unions on what you need from Congress to best serve your members.
